Nicolae Paduraru - Obituary

Nicolae Paduraru, founder of the Transylvanian Society of Dracula, passed away yesterday (May 4, 2009) in Bucharest, Romania, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on Dec 6, 1937, Nicolae graduated from the University of Bucharest's English Department. He worked first as a reporter and later in the Ministry of Tourism, Department of International Relationships. In 1991, he founded the Transylvanian Society of Dracula, a cultural-historical organization dedicated to scholarship and research centred on the two Draculas - the Count of Bram Stoker's novel and the 15th-century Wallachian voivode better known as Vlad the Impaler. In 1995, the Romanian TSD organized the first World Dracula Congress and have held annual symposia in Romania ever since. Nicolae also founded the Company of Mysterious Journeys, a travel agency specializing in Dracula-themed tours.

Nicolae leaves to mourn his wife and one son, along with hundreds of friends, acquaintances and tour participants both in Romania and around the world.

The Passing of a Scholar and Gentleman

I was fortunate to travel to Romania twice (the first time in 2000, the second in 2007) on trips largely coordinated by Nicky and am still grateful for his showing me (and my husband on the second trip) his beautiful native land. He will always cheerful and, what's most important in someone who creates tours and symposia, informative and entertaining. He will be missed by an entire community of people.

Nicolae drove me from the airport to Sinaia when I attended a colloquium some years ago. I learned more about modern Romanian history on the hour long car ride than I ever have since. He has lived in all my retellings of my trip, and remains one of my most favorite people I had the pleasure of meeting.

Have any arrangements been announced? I would like to send condolences.

I met Nicolae for the first time on the tour after the 2007 symposium. He was very kind, and I loved his stories about all the places we visited. Last year I went on the tour in June, and he made sure I got to go to Snagov. I got to make the boat trip over to and back from the monastery with Nicolae. He always made me smile.

I was saddened to hear of Nicolae's death. When I was in Bucharest two years ago researching my novel on Vlad, he very kindly met me for a drink (which he bought!) and told me fascinating tales of the voivode, folk myth, and present day Romanian politics. He then took me to an amazing traditional restaurant and left me there, having first told the owner that I was a Canadian journalist. This got me the best table in the house and salutes from the Italian tenor. He shall be much missed.

A genuine loss

My husband Steve and I made our trip to Romania in July of 2006. It was our honeymoon, and Nicolae was our guide. I am deeply saddened that he will not be there to share our 5 year anniversary trip. He was such a wonderful man, and so many of the wonderful memories we have of Romania are due to him. We will mourn his loss greatly. Our hearts go out to his family and friends. He has always held a special place in our hearts and memories and he will be truly missed. We love you Nicolae,

The world needs more people like him

I can´t stop crying since I heard the bad news. It´s really strange to remember that two days ago I looked in Internet for pics of Sinaia Palace Hotel, and when I saw some of them, suddendly remembered the wonderful time I spent there. The chats with Nicolae is something I'll never forget. We was such a refined and smart man. He made me love Romania. I was there in 1999, and always wanted to go back, but I never could. He showed me a different world.
Thank you Nicolae for everything you gave to me.

Nicolae was undoubtedly one of the nicest and truly inspirational people I have ever met. His depth of knowledge and passionate commitment were surpassed only by his wonderful sense of humour. I have known many successful people, over the years, in the worlds of entertainment or politics. Yet I have never met anyone who had a better ability to capture and inspire his audience than Nicolae. Most of all, I will never forget Nicolae's humanity and compassion. He was a great friend to me when I was going through difficult times and he gave me his support and understanding when many of my longer-established friends did not. He once even sacrificed his own financial interests by turning away business from my former employer because of the way they had treated me. That was just a small example of what a wonderful friend he was to me and to many others, I'm sure. The world will be a much poorer place without him. I will miss him terribly and will certainly never forget him.

Are you Sir Howard, the man that became a Transylvanian Knight in 1999? Perhaps we made the Dracula Tour together.
