A friend and I spent the weekend in Stratford (Ontario) where we attended two performances at the Stratford Festival. The first was the 1970s hit musical "Jesus Christ Superstar". The audience (many young people) was a-buzz before the opening curtain - and the cast did not disappoint. An energetic performance indeed!
Yesterday we took in a stage adaptation of Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath". I was looking forward to this, as the book is one of my favorite novels. Thankfully, the play was true to the original. Though a couple of performances were a bit flat, the production moved relentlessly towards its powerful ending (again, as in the book). As a condemnation of unregulated capitalism, deprivation and exploitation, "The Grapes of Wrath" is as relevant today as when it was written in the late 1930s.
Tomorrow I am off to Warsaw. Will post about it next week.
